"Reverence to the ancestors is general in Africa. It hinges on the belief in the continuous existence of man after death. Mainly, they are those who while alive made life worth living for their contemporaries and thus enjoyed the good will of the living descendants. They are regarded as deified spirits because they are believed to have acquired extra powers in the land of the dead. With these powers, it is believed that they could intervene in the lives of the living and act as intermediaries between God and men."
